In the words of the late Nelson Mandela, “Education is the most powerful weapon that you can use to change the world”, so it really is so exciting to see the massive improvement in the matric results of the learners from Vele Secondary School! The Grade 12 pass rate has improved from 38% in 2009 to just over 93% in 2013, a jump of 55%, and 15% higher than the national average. But numbers can be deceiving and it’s only when we dig down into these figures that we understand the real change that’s taking place at Vele.
In 2011 Vele Secondary School had a matric pass rate of 83.4%, but only 13 learners sat for the exams, versus the 96 learners that had started at the school in Grade 8; i.e. 83 learners had not made it through to matric. So even though the pass rate was relatively high, the results were not as positive as they seemed at first glance. Fast forward to 2013 where 43 learners from Vele Secondary School wrote the Grade 12 exams, and an impressive 40 of them passed! And the news gets even better when we look a the quality of these results. Seventeen learners achieved Bachelor Passes allowing them entrance to university, along with 16 distinctions spread across the class of 2013 – one learner alone achieved an impressive seven distinctions!
With close to 500 students currently enrolled, Vele Secondary School represents a real opportunity to make a difference in the lives of the youth of Vhembe. Thank you to the community, the teachers, but most of all to the Grade 12 learners for all their hard work. Let’s make 2014 even better!
